Drilling into Sales
"Nissan Australia has recently developed an Intranet to service our operations Australia wide. As part of the Intranet pilot we wished to include the facility to display sales graphs.
"Our hardware platform is an OS/390 mainframe, Sun Solaris UNIX Boxes, several NT servers and Novell Netware 4.11 servers. Our desktops are Windows 95 PC's. All our corporate data is held on the OS/390 mainframe using Adabas and Natural.
"Because our corporate data is held on our mainframe in a non-relational database, getting to the data was quite a challenge."
The Process
Visual Mining's NetCharts Applets is able to "read data from a file at the time the charts are displayed."
Because of this, it's possible to "create a file that the package can read, directly from our mainframe. This means that once the data is transferred to the web server there is no processing needed to produce the charts."
Because Visual Mining solutions are written in Java, "we can distribute the charts to any Java-enabled browser without the need to distribute any executables or components."
Reliability and Full Functionality
"The functionality provided ..is extremely impressive, allowing the creation of more styles of charts than we will ever need."
Visual Mining solutions are "enormously flexible allowing almost any setting to be manipulated through the data file transferred from our mainframe.
"The drill down capability of the charts we found most useful since we can start at a very high level (e.g. National Sales for all Models) and progressively move to a more and more detailed view with simply a click of the mouse.
"Currently we are producing over 150 different charts which are updated every half hour."
