Holy Name Hosptial

Integrating Graphs Into Essential Services

"[NetCharts Applets is] a great product, very reasonably priced, and includes a plethora of graph styles."

Holy Name Hospital is a fully accredited, not-for-profit community hospital located in suburban Teaneck, New Jersey. Founded and sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in 1925, the hospital has grown to become a comprehensive 370-bed medical center.

Their IT infrastructure is based on an IBM AS/400 (now the iSeries), running both new and legacy applications. The AS/400 server works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year in and year out, and handles diverse applications such as patient registration, finances, and patient vitals monitoring. Currently, about 1100 devices within the hospital are also hooked up to the AS/400.

The Holy Name Hospital CEO, being IT-savvy, insists that their Hospital Information System (HIS) keep up with the state of the art. The IT staff updated their services from the text-only "green screen" output throughout the hospital to a visually-oriented, browser-based system-a transition done neither lightly nor over night.

AS/400 with NetCharts

The point of bringing the hospital's applications into graphically-oriented output is to be able to better convey information so that patients receive better care and administrators can run more efficient operations. To directly show trends and make comparisons, and therefore decisions, at a glance, they made the decision to enhance their information systems through data graphics. All of Holy Name's varied applications require graphs-a lot of different graphs.
